Beyond its excellent public schools, the Triangle area offers a diverse selection of independent schools.

In its 46th year, St. Timothy’s is an Episcopal school located in the North Hills area of Raleigh.  Serving grades K-8, St. Timothy’s seeks to provide “academic, emotional, physical and spiritual growth in an atmosphere that emphasizes traditional Christian values.”  In November 2003, St. Timothy’s held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new, two-story building that will include 26 classrooms.

Founded in 1862 by members of the Christ Episcopal Church, Ravenscroft School became non-sectarian in 1966. Ravenscroft is one of only five schools in the country recognized by the National Association of Independent Schools and is the only independent PK-12 Blue Ribbon School in the Triangle area. With 1100 students, Ravenscroft is composed of an Upper School, Middle School and Lower School. The average SAT score for Upper School graduates in 1993 was 1234.

Serving grades 6-12, Cary Academy has an Upper School and a Middle School. Enjoying a diverse student body, Cary Academy attracts students from across the Triangle area. In addition to small class sizes ranging from eight to 20, Cary Academy also assigns an adviser to each student. Admissions begin in the fall, and minimum entrance requirements must be met for acceptance into the school.

As an all-girls college preparatory school, St. Mary’s celebrates a 162-year tradition of educational excellence. Located on a beautiful 23-acre campus, St. Mary’s is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places.

Founded in 1991, Triangle Day School is a non-sectarian, K-8 independent school.  Featuring a rigorous academic program, Triangle Day enrolls 180 students and has waiting lists for most grades. As an independent school, it is able to offer a student-teacher ratio of 9 to 1 and a maximum class size of 18. The main academic facility of Triangle Day has undergone numerous renovations in recent years to increase the size of its classrooms, enlarge a multipurpose area and expand computer space.

Starting as a playgroup in 1978, Hillel Day School grew to 60 students within three years. After adding a building, the school has expanded to include grades K-9. In addition to its academic program, Hillel also offers Judaic studies and Modern Hebrew.

Formerly known as St. Timothy-Hale’s School, St. David’s was originally founded in 1972 as Hale High School. A middle school was added in 1990, and in 2003 the school changed its name to St. David’s and expanded to include grades K-12. As an independent Episcopal school, St. David’s focuses on the vital areas of faith, virtue and knowledge.
